Where I’m From

Where I‘m From

I am from a small apartment
on the fifth floor,
from a living room with no TV.
I am from long hours of homework –
reading, repeating, writing, reciting –
endless pages;
from long hours of piano practice –
arpeggios, scales, adagios, sonatas –
endless notes of Rigodon
that hurt my fingers.

I am from city asphalt.
(Gray turned red
when it rose to touch my knees,
but I am a soldier of the playground,
iodine would wait,
game goes on.)

I am from a toy train
that foreshadowed a long journey
that took me away –
far away –
from where I am from.
