On Language Learning

To follow up on the class discussions, I ask you to find quotes about language – the role it plays in society and personal affairs, the status of English as a global language of problem solving.
Type the quote in the comments including the author and the URL. Remember to use the quotation marks ” ” around your quote. Write three to five sentences explaining why you have chosen this quote.
Here are examples:
“Language is the house of being.” (Martin Heidegger, a German philosopher)
http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/heidegge.htm
Similar to a house, language can build walls or open doors, can be poor and dirty or rich and beautiful. Like architects, writers create structures. Sentences need to be well-designed and form paragraphs with smooth transitions. I dwell in language – the house with form, function, and aesthetic appeal.
“I am under the spell of language, which has ruled me since I was 10.” (V.S. Pritchett, an English writer)
http://creativequotations.com/one/1931.htm
I like this quote because it reflects my intimate relation with the language from adolescence to this day. I keep dictionaries in every room in the house. Dictionary is magic. It’s a book version of hypertext before the Internet. As I am writing this, a dictionary of quotations, “Camp’s Unfamiliar Quotations from 2000 B.C. to the Present,” falls on my lap and opens on page 170 with a message from a French poet Louis Aragon,
“Language was not given to man: he seized it.” This puts the learner in the driver’s seat. My students of English understand that their effort, their investment into language education, will allow them to build a solid foundation for the edifice of their future.
(I used analogy between language and a house. House, building, and edifice are synonyms; edifice is a big fancy building.)

  1. “Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow.”
    ~Oliver Wendell Holmes~

I really do agree with this quote because it actually does mean what languge means in the world.

    Translation in Italian
“La lingua è il sangue dell’anima in cui i pensieri correre e di cui si sviluppano.”
    ~Oliver Wendell Holmes~

Sono davvero d’accordo con questa citazione perché in realtà non significa quello che significa languge nel mondo.

    My own
    English

“The more languges you know the more friends you will have”

    ~Luis Hinojos~
    Italiano
“Le lingue più si sa, l’amico più avrete”

    ~Luis Hinojos~

  2. “We dissect nature along lines laid down by our native language. Language is not simply a reporting device for experience but a defining framework for it.”

This is true because language is not used show people things in their culture, but to teach them about our culture.

  3. “Thought is the blossom; language the bud; action the fruit behind it”
I chose this qoute because is saying that when you think something you dont do much but if you say it, it does a little damage and saying its better to learn a diffrent language but action is the worst thing you can do so its the fruit.

  4. No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. ~Henry Brooks Adams
Some words or things that we don’t really mean to say come out when we dont even realize it. Therefore, words are slippery like when were angry & we say stuff to our friends it just comes out. I like this quote because it’s true that when we say things we just say it before we think about what we are going to say. The words would also be viscous.

  5. “Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.”
    -Flora Lewis
i will agree with her because people thing everything in life is easy until one day they realized not everuthing is easy. when we only know one language or something we see everything just like black and white but when you know other language you see everything in a different color. like i say you know another language you will be count like two person even do you are just one. never let anything down specially if you know it right is a little thing you could fix it. thats why i agree on this quote.

  6. “To a teacher of languages there comes a time when the world is but a place of many words and man appears a mere talking animal not much more wonderful than a parrot”

    -Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) British novelist

When you know all the languages in the world the meanings of words lose thier meaning and tone. When you know how to write out all the languages the world just feels like thousaands of words just floating around in the air. When you teach a language to a student they must repeat it back to you for reference and thus your students become like parrots just repeating the teacher.

  7. “those who Know nothing of foreigh languages know nothing of their own” This quote is by johanna wolfgang von goethe.
This quote means that if you do not think learning other languages are important. Then you really don’t know whats importent then. Because i fully believe learnig other languages are very importent because, we have culture ,and diversity. If you do not want to learn another language then what do you really know about your own language.

  8. “The language of friendship is not words but meanings.”

    -Henry David Thoreau

“Friendship can not be told in a story or book. But only in memories of those friends minds. True friends will always be there for you no matter the times. My bestfriend means the world to me. I couldn’t bear to lose her.”

  9. “Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.” http://thinkexist.com/quotation/language-shapes-the-way-we-think-and-determines/348761.html I chose this quote because I always think about how we learn to speak and how we learn language. I agree with the quote because the way we think is shaped by our language and how we think about certain things. A nfriend of mine once told me that on foreign languages, she is great at the vocabulary. That just explains how we think. I think that language is interesting, a new experience, and a chance to learn.

  14. There is, of course, no denying that the knowledge of the English language is one of the most important tools available to our children. It is one of the international languages, a tool of communication between countries, cultural groups, various companies and organizations, communities and friends.

  16. “Language is power, life and the instrument of culture, the instrument of domination and liberation.”
    -Angela Carter
    http://www.betterworld.net/quotes/language-quotes.htm

This means that language is something important, because if you know more languages you can share ideas with people from a different culture. Language represent power, because the more you know, the more things you can be able to do it. If you know more than one language, you can have more freedom, because you can learn from other cultures.
