Is fútbol a man’s game?

A post by John Turnbull, the editor of The Global Game
A few entries in The Global Game: Writers on Soccer are about women’s soccer – one of my favorites is a story you have already read, “Hem and Football.” A few others are written by women writers. One of these stories, “Young Shoots” (page 67), concerns a soccer-like game played in Japan 1,000 years ago.
The poem “Dreaming of Sunday Afternoons” (page 119), published originally as “El sueño del domingo (por la tarde),” is by a woman writer from Peru, Giovanna Pollarolo. Think about the language that Pollarolo uses: Why does she use specific product names: Inca Kola, Rivarde Body Shop, BVDs? What are the different meanings of “exile”? Why does she use the English word “click”? Read the last paragraph of the editors’ introduction. A professor from Medellín, Colombia – her name is Beatriz Vélez – tells a story about her brother, who was a soccer player. Here is the Spanish:

Imagine that you are the woman in Pollarolo’s poem. Choose between two short writing assignments of at least one page (250 words): (1) You decide that you will speak to your mother and father about the Sunday afternoon routine. Write the imaginary dialogue. Does the situation get better, or worse? (2) You decide to write a statement of rights, sometimes called a “manifesto” (see page 157, “For the Sake of My Right and Not Football,” for an example). You want to say that girls and women have the right to play and to watch fútbol. How do you make your argument?
I’d like to award a copy of the book to the best writing on the topic.

  2. Rights for us the women to play soccer
We,the women and girls, have equal rights as men to play soccer without any differences between us. I ask you men to let women and girls plays soccer or any sport they want to play. Females have the same right to plays soccer as men. Females are humans equal to men. Men must not reduces their wives and daughters to maids or domestics servants.
Women and men have the same right to play soccer. Both women and men have the ability to prove their skill and knowledge playing soccer not matter what they are. We, the women, have to fight for our rights and show up that we can do what the men do. If men can play, women can too. So we can share women and men together. Sometimes men think that we the women are weak for our manner to be but they are wrong women and girls have the same forces that they have. men have to let women and girl play soccer to improve health, develop life skill. In the past decade girl were not allowed play until 1986 Similar restrictions have existed elsewhere. But now we can change the law that let girls and women play soccer because we have the same capacity and potential as them. Men have to stop controls the women as slaves and give right to play. The reason why we are women is not only to stays in the house clean the dishes and cooking. We want the right to play soccer as men do it doesn’t matter which sex we are we want freedom for us the women.

  3. Giovanna’s Manifesto
We ask men to let girls play Fútbol, see games on TV, or go to the stadium to see the game. Women want to stop do all the job at home women like fútbol too. They want to have fun like men do on Sundays when they watch at fútbol. Women want to talk about fútbol. Women want to have a day for them. They would like to have fun with all the family. Women wish to see the games with all the family. Women want more excitement than just work , work , work. Mundane jobs cleanly, washing briny then down. And they don’t have one day for them, that’s why women want to have one day with out doing all the work that they have to do every day. Women would like to go play in the feel and fun like all the men do they want to flee free on what they like to do and have fun for all the time. Women would like to go to the the soccer feel and play as much time they can that what women would like to do.

  4. Stop Possessing

Women ask men to let them play soccer . Females are the same as males. They are human ; they were made by god . Women have the same rights as men do . Females from all around the world want freedom , but who will give it to them ? They want men to stop possessing them . What do man have and women don’t ? what are Men better than women at , Females and Males pretty much share a lot of similarities with each other . Why is it Man who possess Women ? Women want there Owen freedom . If religion or tradition stands in the way of getting there freedom , both sides could find a solution . If women can not play soccer because men will be watching , then let’s give them there own stadium , were only females can get in there . If females can not play soccer because they have to work at home , then men should give them a special day in a week or a month to play soccer in . And for watching soccer on TV or go to a stadium to watch soccer live , then I think Men should put a special stands sections for women only , and for TV I think Men should buy a second TV to watch soccer In . Women have other things beside soccer to watch , and men should respect there wishes . Women like to watch TV too . soccer should have accesses to every living creature on earth . We all are the same in what we do , we shouldn’t take the freedom of others to have ours .

  5. I was cleaning the house the whole day, and my dommie brother came from playing fútbol, and he had his shoes full of dirt and mud.
After that I told my parents, I started talking with my father -“father look what my brother did with the floor I just clean”.
-”don’t worry he says I’ll send him to clean it again” my father did send him to clean the floor, but disobey our father’s order. Then I told my mom -“mom look my brother mess up the floor that I just clean- “I’ll tell him to clean it again” my mother says.

My brother didn’t obey any of my parent and I had to do the work again, th at time I was not that much angry, but what really makes me more angry was that I had to clean the floor two times he went back to another activity, and he mess up his shoes again , and I don’t care if he mess his shoes up, but what I really care is that is was going to mess my floor again.

A couple hours later he was returning back “look mom” I say “my brother is going to mess it again, and if he do that again, I promise mom I wouldn’t clean his mess again, besides I’m not his maid”.
-I don’t care he says I has enough money to pay a really good maid, you don’t even clean that well.
-”okay I say, you can do weathever you want with your money since is your money, but I’ll tell you something I will not tolerate that you mess my work, because while I do it you have to respect it, and obey what I tell you.

-”stop guys” my mom says, you are not going to fight inside this home, if you want to fight then go outside” she said.
No way my father says we are all together to discuss this big trouble we have here”

-”well” he says Giovanna says I had the fought, and I think she is right, and -thats why I told her I want to hire a maid”.

”well, it is my fault, and I think she is right, and thats why I told her I want to hire a maid.”
“Wait a minute” my father said “are you planing to hire a maid.”
      “yes he said.”
      “do you have enough money?”
      “Yes” brother replied.
“Where did you get it from?” father asked.
“I have been working,” brother replied.
      “Where at?”
“ Didn’t mom and Giovanna tell you?.”
“Tell me what?,” “that you have been working in a soccer association?.”
      “yes,” my brother said.
“Well good luck then”. My father smiled.
