School Lunches International: A Virtual Exchange Pilot

In September 2006, the National Geographic published a feature comparing school lunches in the United States, Russia, and Japan. Schools in Virginia, St.Petersburg and Sapporo were selected to showcase a typical lunch. The American lunch fare of 812 calories contains two turkey hot dogs, Tater Tots, broccoli and cauliflower dip,  and milk at the cost of $2.00. Students in Russia pay an equivalent of 78 cents for a meal of borscht (beet soup), beef cutlet with buckwheat, rye bread, and apple kissel (juice drink with sugar and starch). The calorie count for this meal amounts to 527.

What will you tell to students in other countries about food in your school? I address this question both to my American students in Texas and students of English in a school in Polyarnye Zori in the Murmansk Region, Russia.

  • What meals are served in your cafeteria and at what price?
  • What are the food options on the menu?
  • What do you and your friends think about the food?
  • How do lunches fit the school schedule?
  • Do many students bring their lunches from home?
  • Does your own lunch differ from that in the NG or is it similar?
  • What questions do you have for your peers in the other country?

I hope that your informative comments will start an exciting cross-cultural dialogue.

  6. helo every body! I hope you are doing fine. I’m here to explain to you the different options we have here on our school’s lunch. We have nachos,(chips, cheese, beef and pepper), we also have pizza, and hamburguers. To drink we have milk, orange and apple juices, and ice tea. the lunch here most of the time is free, but some people pay like $.40 cents.
My friends and I think that is pretty good. Some students bring their own lunch. we have three lunches in here A,B,and C. Our lunch is not the same as the National Geographic lunches. I have some questions for you: What do you usually eat on your school’s lunch?
How much do you pay for it?
At what time do you eat lunch?
How many lunches do you have or you go all at the same time?
